"The Thames is the lifeblood of our city but, as a crew member at Tower Lifeboat Station, I know it can be deadly. Around 20 people still drown in the river every year so every second counts when it comes to saving lives.

Our crew are a reassuring presence. Lifeboats have become an essential part of London life but not everyone realizes we’ve been here, rescuing Londoners and visitors alike since 2002. We deal with fast-moving water, bridges, piers and massive numbers of people and constant river traffic. That’s why we’re the UK’s busiest lifeboat crew and need to be on station 24/7. Sadly, our station is no longer fit for purpose. It’s a cramped, old barge that

lacks proper facilities. That’s a problem for both my crewmates and the people we save daily. For those living on station during 12- hour shifts, it’s bumpy and uncomfortable. There’s no dedicated space to dry our kit or welcome visitors.

The pier outside is visible to onlookers, which isn’t great for casualties. When we need to urgently carry out CPR there for instance, there’s no privacy from the general public. Crucially though, the structure has suffered so much wear and tear that it’s beyond economical repair. It’s not fit for the future.

We urgently need your help to fund a purpose-built lifeboat station at Tower to carry on our lifesaving mission. We don’t receive government funding so are really counting on your support to help meet the £5M total cost of this project. It’s a once-in-ageneration opportunity for you to be part of an enduring London landmark."
